Welcome to the Sibthorp Trust.  We promote the study and discussion of major environmental issues through the commissioning of workshops, seminars or study groups. We publish the outputs to help ensure that debate is underpinned by best available science.

The Trust is a registered charity named after Mary Sibthorp, who made a

generous bequest in her will 1991. Mary was very concerned with the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.

The Trust is managed by a Board of Trustees in association with IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

The ‘Sibthorp Papers’ provide important scientific insights into scientific questions and potential soultions. For example, “Ecosystem Management: Questions for Science and Society” has made a major contribution to the elaboration of the ecosystem approach as the framework for implementation of the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

To bring the Ecosystem Approach to life, a short film has been made showing how beavers can radically transform the landscape.

Four Sibthorp Seminars to date (1996, 2000, 2007 and 2011). All have been successful in advancing the thinking on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

The Trust has brought scientific debate to the nation through public meetings broadcast by the BBC.

We held the first post-Brexit-referendum public debate on the future of  environmental policy in the UK following the vote to leave the European Union, chaired by Jonathan Dimbleby.

A video of the conference can be found here.
